Background OverviewAfter graduating with a BSc in Computer Studies in 2000, I initially found work in the London Area as a web developer for a company specializing in database management. As part of a new Internet team we worked to create tools which would allow customers to view and modify their data via a number of web based portals. Following on from this, the team went on to provide an suite of tools which would allow customers to use their existing DBs to power ecomerce web sites. In 2002 I decided to take the oportunity of finding work on a contract basis. I stayed in and around London and worked on several project programming in Java with JSP powered front ends. This gave me my initial exposure to the myriad of skills required in todays web development environment. Throughout this time I worked principally in DB design and development on the server side. Much of the front end work was created by in house web designers. Recent YearsIn a desire to move home to the north-east I decided I would like to change career slightly and look for a role where I could mainly work from home. I decided to move into an area which excited me and gave the oportunity to keep learning and progressing. To this end I started to search for freelance work where I could use the technologies which were fast becoming the norm in small-medium sized web site development. I became proficient in PHP and quickly got up to speed on the changes between the Java and the PHP / mySQL models. I am excited by the potential of PHP and I am constantly adding to my library of reusable code to help in future projects. |
